The Ultimate Easy Glazed Chocolate Donuts Recipe
This past weekend presented a rare and wonderful opportunity: a full day completely to myself! My husband, Brian, took the kids to his mom’s house, leaving me with an open canvas for a glorious Saturday. While the thought of exciting adventures definitely crossed my mind, I, like many dedicated bloggers, ended up immersing myself in various blog-related tasks. It was a blessing, truly, to work through my never-ending to-do list without the delightful, yet frequent, distractions that come with having little ones around. The peace and quiet were profoundly productive and incredibly refreshing.
Though I once prided myself on being a morning person, the last few years have seen me gradually transform into more of a night owl. This means that waking up bright and early, feeling energized and ready to conquer the day, isn’t always my natural state. On most mornings, I undeniably need a little something extra to kickstart my senses and truly feel alive. And let me tell you, few things in this world can trump that first glorious sip of morning coffee!
The Perfect Pairing: Homemade Donuts and Personalized Coffee
Folgers, a name synonymous with comforting coffee moments, understands that each of us has a unique way we prefer our brew. They are dedicated to helping us craft exactly what we desire, right in our own homes. Their innovative Folgers Flavors allow for complete customization of your coffee experience. Imagine having coffeehouse-quality beverages without ever leaving your kitchen – it feels like such a luxurious indulgence, doesn’t it? Since Brian and the kids had an early start, I decided to treat myself to a truly special morning: enjoying my perfectly customized coffee with some fresh, warm, homemade donuts. And that, of course, meant I had to make them!
These Glazed Chocolate Donuts are an absolute sensation in my household, a beloved favorite that disappears almost as quickly as they’re made. Their rich, tender crumb and sweet, glossy glaze are utterly irresistible. And in my humble opinion, they reach an entirely new level of deliciousness when thoughtfully paired with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. The slight bitterness and robust notes of coffee beautifully complement the sweetness and cocoa richness of the donuts, creating a balanced and deeply satisfying treat that makes any morning feel like a special occasion.
Why Bake Your Own Glazed Chocolate Donuts?
While store-bought donuts can be incredibly convenient, there’s an undeniable magic to baking your own at home. The process itself is a therapeutic act, filling your kitchen with an inviting aroma that promises deliciousness before you even take the first bite. Homemade donuts offer unparalleled freshness; they are at their absolute peak moments after cooling from the oven, still slightly warm with a glaze that’s just beginning to set. You also have complete control over the ingredients, allowing you to choose quality components and even customize flavors to your heart’s content, perhaps adding a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of espresso powder to the chocolate batter for an extra layer of flavor.
Beyond the taste, baking donuts at home can be a wonderfully fun activity, whether you’re baking solo for a quiet morning treat or involving the whole family in a weekend baking project. It’s a chance to get creative in the kitchen and enjoy the satisfaction of creating something so delectable from scratch. Plus, knowing exactly what goes into your treats adds an extra layer of enjoyment and peace of mind.

Glazed Chocolate Donuts Recipe
By Jamie Sherman
There’s nothing like a classic recipe – these Glazed Chocolate Donuts are quick and easy to make at home, perfect for pairing with your morning coffee!
Yields: 18 donuts
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 9 minutes
Total Time: 19 minutes
Ingredients
For the Donuts:
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- ⅔ cup sour cream, full-fat recommended
- ⅔ cup buttermilk
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed for darker color and milder flavor)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
For the Glaze:
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar), sifted to remove any lumps
- 3 – 4 tablespoons milk or water (start with 3 and add more a teaspoon at a time for desired consistency)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, optional (but highly recommended for an extra layer of flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease your donut pans with butter or non-stick spray and set them aside. This crucial step ensures your delicious donuts won’t stick!
- In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together the softened butter, pure vanilla extract, packed brown sugar, and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, usually about 2-3 minutes. Beat in the large egg until fully incorporated, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Then, stir in the sour cream and buttermilk until everything is well combined and smooth.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: baking powder, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa powder, and all-purpose flour. Make sure there are no lumps in the cocoa powder.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter; overmixing can lead to tough donuts. A few small lumps are perfectly fine and will lead to a tender, moist donut.
- Carefully fill the donut pan cavities three-quarters of the way full. A piping bag with the end snipped off makes this process much neater and easier, but you can also use a spoon to carefully scoop the batter.
- Bake for 9 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean. The donuts should be springy to the touch.
- Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 2-3 minutes before carefully removing them to a wire rack. Let them cool completely before glazing. This prevents the glaze from melting off.
To make the glaze:
- In a medium bowl, place the sifted powdered sugar. Slowly stir in the milk (or water) and the optional vanilla extract, adding a little at a time, until you achieve a smooth, pourable glaze consistency. You want it thick enough to coat the donuts nicely, but thin enough to drip slightly.
- Once the donuts have completely cooled, dip each donut into the prepared glaze, ensuring both sides are coated evenly. For a thicker glaze, you can double-dip after the first layer has set.
- Place the glazed donuts back on the wire rack with a sheet of parchment paper or foil underneath to catch any drips. Allow the glaze to set for at least 15-20 minutes before serving for the best results.
Notes for Success:
- If you don’t have enough donut pans for all of your batter at once, don’t worry! The batter is stable enough to rest on the counter while you bake the first batch.
- For extra flavor and moisture, ensure your butter is truly softened to room temperature before creaming. Cold butter will not cream properly.
- These homemade donuts are best enjoyed fresh, ideally on the day they are made. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, but the texture is best when fresh.
- For a delightful twist, consider adding a sprinkle of flaky sea salt over the wet glaze for a delicious sweet and salty contrast. Alternatively, top with chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips before the glaze sets.
