Schroeder’s Piano Key Cookies: Celebrating Peanuts Nostalgia and Fun
Who else is eagerly anticipating a trip to the cinema for the latest Peanuts movie? My children have been counting down the days, and I must confess, so have I! Growing up, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, and the entire Peanuts gang were an integral part of my childhood. Their timeless adventures and relatable dilemmas filled our screens, especially during the holiday seasons. Just recently, we watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown for what felt like the millionth time – a tradition that never gets old. The Peanuts universe holds a special place in many hearts, evoking a sense of innocent charm and profound life lessons that transcend generations.
As The Peanuts Movie makes its grand debut, a few of my fellow bloggers and I decided to collaborate on a special series, bringing you a collection of fun, themed recipes and crafts! This is an exciting new monthly venture, so be sure to keep an eye out for more inspiring posts. Our aim is to help you bring a little bit of that Peanuts magic into your home, whether through delicious treats or engaging activities that the whole family can enjoy together.
The Inspiration Behind the Keys: Schroeder and His Piano
Among the many beloved Peanuts characters, Schroeder has always held a special spot in my heart. His unwavering dedication to classical music, his mini grand piano, and his patient (or sometimes not-so-patient) interactions with Lucy are truly iconic. While I may not be the most intricate cake and cookie decorator, I was absolutely thrilled with how these Schroeder’s Piano Key Cookies turned out! It just goes to show that baking doesn’t always have to be about perfection; sometimes, the joy of creating something whimsical and delicious is all that matters. My kiddos certainly loved them, and their smiles were the best reward.
For these piano key cookies, I decided to experiment with raspberry extract instead of the traditional lemon, adding a vibrant twist to the flavor profile. But the beauty of this recipe is its versatility – feel free to infuse your cookies with any clear extract you prefer! Vanilla, almond, or even a hint of mint could create equally delightful results. The simple, elegant design of the piano keys makes these cookies recognizable and charming, perfect for any Peanuts-themed gathering or a cozy movie night at home.

Ingredients
For the cookies
- 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the royal icing
- 4 egg whites
- 4 cups sifted powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon extract, you can substitute any clear extract (like raspberry, almond, or vanilla)
Instructions
For the cookies:
-
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next, then stir in the vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. Cover the dough tightly with plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for at least one hour, or ideally overnight. This chilling step is crucial for making the dough easier to roll and preventing the cookies from spreading too much during baking.
-
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly flour a clean surface or use parchment paper. Roll out the chilled dough to a thickness of approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Using a sharp knife or a rectangular cookie cutter, cut the dough into uniform rectangle shapes to resemble piano keys. Carefully transfer the cut cookies to ungreased cookie sheets, leaving about 1 inch of space between each cookie to allow for slight expansion.
-
Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 6 to 8 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Baking time may vary slightly depending on your oven and the thickness of your cookies. Once baked, remove the cookie sheets from the oven and let the cookies cool on the sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. It’s essential that the cookies are fully cooled before you begin decorating with royal icing.
For the royal icing:
-
In a clean, large bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer at high speed until they become foamy. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, about half a cup at a time, continuing to beat until fully incorporated. Stir in the lemon extract (or your chosen clear extract). Continue beating at high speed until the icing is thickened and holds stiff peaks. This process usually takes several minutes. For best results and safety, always use fresh, Grade A, uncracked eggs. The consistency of royal icing is key for decorating, so ensure it’s thick enough to hold its shape but still smooth enough to pipe.
To assemble and decorate the cookies:
-
Divide the royal icing into two portions. Tint about half of the royal icing black using gel food coloring. Gel food coloring provides rich color without adding excess liquid, which can alter the icing consistency. Place the black icing into a piping bag fitted with a small round tip. Keep the white icing covered to prevent it from drying out.
-
With the black icing, carefully outline the rectangular cookies to create the base of the piano keys. Then, pipe smaller black rectangles onto some of the larger white keys to represent the black keys of a piano. Use the images in this post as a visual guide to arrange the black keys in the familiar pattern (e.g., groups of two and three black keys). Precision is important here to achieve the authentic piano key look.
-
Place the white icing into a separate piping bag, also fitted with a small round tip. Flood the remaining white areas of the cookies, filling in the spaces between the black outlines and any areas designated as white keys. If necessary, use a toothpick or a small brush to gently spread the icing into the corners and achieve a smooth, even surface.
-
Allow the royal icing to harden completely. This can take several hours, or even overnight, depending on the humidity. Once fully hardened, the cookies can be stacked and stored in an airtight container at room temperature. They make a beautiful and delicious display for any Peanuts fan!
Notes
- For an even more realistic look, make a variety of keys to mimic a real keyboard, including groups of two and three black keys.
- Ensure your royal icing is of the right consistency. If it’s too thick, add a tiny bit of water; if too thin, add more sifted powdered sugar.
- Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
