Irresistible Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Rolls: Your New Favorite Weeknight Meal
Welcome to Foodie Friday: A Dash of Sanity in Every Bite!
Welcome back to another delightful edition of Foodie Friday! Here at Love Bakes Good Cakes, we’re thrilled to host Sandra from A Dash of Sanity, who joins us every second Friday of the month to share one of her most cherished and delectable recipes. Today, Sandra brings us a recipe that promises to transform your dinner routine with minimal fuss and maximum flavor: her amazing Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Rolls.
There are days when a specific craving hits, and for Sandra, it was a profound longing for Chicken Cordon Bleu. Not just a mild desire, but an intense, “either I make it or we’re going out” kind of craving. On this particular evening, however, going out wasn’t an option. Picture this: a lone parent, five energetic children fresh from school, and the inevitable “after-school chaos” taking over the house. The initial grand dinner plans were quickly fading into oblivion, replaced by the pressing need for something quick, satisfying, and, crucially, easy to clean up. It was in this moment of delightful domestic frenzy that inspiration struck!
What if the trusty bread machine, usually reserved for simple loaves, could be repurposed? What if its freshly kneaded dough could be the foundation for something extraordinary? The idea blossomed: use the bread machine dough to create delectable dinner rolls, generously stuffed with all the classic flavors of Chicken Cordon Bleu. And just like that, the ingenious recipe for these irresistible Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Rolls was born.
This culinary creation turned out to be an absolute triumph – a true win-win for everyone involved. Sandra got to savor the dinner she had been desperately craving, the kitchen cleanup was refreshingly minimal, and most importantly, her five discerning critics (the kids!) absolutely adored them. They were an instant hit, quickly becoming a staple in their meal rotation and even making appearances in their lunchboxes the following day. When a recipe gets the seal of approval from a busy mom and a panel of young eaters, you know it’s something special.
Homemade Dough vs. Store-Bought: Your Flexible Choice
While the magic of these rolls begins with fresh, homemade dough from a bread machine, Sandra assures us that the recipe is wonderfully flexible. If you find yourself short on time amidst the whirlwind of daily life, don’t hesitate to opt for pre-made dough. Store-bought crescent roll dough offers a fantastic shortcut, allowing you to whip up this impressive meal in even less time. However, if your schedule permits, we wholeheartedly encourage you to try the homemade version. The tender, flaky texture and rich flavor of fresh, bread-machine-made dough elevate these rolls to an unforgettable experience. They truly are “to die for,” and the effort, when you have the time, is undoubtedly worth every single minute.
The Classic Flavors of Chicken Cordon Bleu in a Handheld Delight
Chicken Cordon Bleu is a timeless classic, celebrated for its exquisite combination of tender chicken, savory ham, and melted Swiss cheese. This recipe ingeniously transforms those beloved flavors into a convenient, handheld form, making it perfect for family dinners, party appetizers, or even a sophisticated packed lunch. Each crescent roll is a delightful parcel, offering a burst of rich, cheesy, and meaty goodness wrapped in a golden, flaky crust. It’s comfort food at its finest, reimagined for modern, busy lifestyles.

Ingredients
Crescent Rolls Dough (Homemade with Bread Machine)
- ½ cup warm water, 110 degrees F/45 degrees C
- ½ cup warm milk
- 1 egg
- ⅓ cup butter, softened
- ⅓ cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 package active dry yeast, .25 ounce
- ¼ cup butter, softened (for spreading on dough)
Filling
- 16 slices Swiss cheese
- 16 chicken tenderloins, about 2 lbs.
- 16 slices of Black Forest ham
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
To prepare the crescent rolls:
- Begin by adding the warm water, warm milk, egg, ⅓ cup softened butter, white sugar, salt, all-purpose flour, and active dry yeast to your bread machine pan. Consult your bread machine’s manual for the correct order of ingredients, as this can vary by model.
- Select the “Dough” or “Knead and First Rise” cycle on your bread machine and press Start. This cycle typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing the machine to mix, knead, and perfectly proof your dough.
- While your bread machine is working its magic on the dough, prepare your filling. Season the chicken tenderloins generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper on both sides.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the seasoned chicken tenderloins. Sauté them for approximately 5-7 minutes in total, turning them frequently, until they are thoroughly cooked through and boast a beautiful light golden-brown color on all sides. Avoid overcooking to keep the chicken juicy. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the pan and place it on a plate, loosely covered with a paper towel or foil to keep it warm and prevent it from drying out.
- Once the bread machine cycle finishes, carefully remove the dough. Turn the soft, elastic dough out onto a clean, lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal halves.
- Take one half of the dough and roll it out into a large, uniform 12-inch circle using a rolling pin. Once rolled, spread half of the remaining ¼ cup of softened butter evenly over the entire surface of the dough circle.
- Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut this buttered circle into 8 equal wedges, similar to slicing a pie.
- On the wider end of each dough wedge, place one cooked chicken tenderloin. Layer one slice of Swiss cheese over the chicken (you might need to fold or cut larger slices in half to fit neatly). Finally, top with one slice of Black Forest ham, folding it if necessary to ensure it stays within the boundaries of the roll and doesn’t hang over too much.
- Repeat steps 6-8 for the second half of the dough and the remaining filling ingredients.
To roll and bake the wedges:
- Starting from the wide end of each stuffed wedge, gently but firmly roll the dough towards the pointed end. Ensure the filling is snugly encased. Place the rolled crescent rolls, seam-side (point side) down, onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Loosely cover the cookie sheets with a clean kitchen towel. Place them in a warm, draft-free spot and allow the rolls to rise for an additional 30 minutes. This second rise will make them even lighter and fluffier.
- While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
- Bake the risen crescent rolls in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or until they turn beautifully golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your warm, savory, and incredibly satisfying Chicken Cordon Bleu Crescent Rolls!
Notes and Pro Tips
- Time-Saving Shortcut: If you’re really pressed for time, you can absolutely use store-bought refrigerated crescent roll dough (from tubes). Simply unroll, separate into triangles, fill, and roll as instructed. Adjust baking time according to package directions.
- Cheese Variations: While Swiss cheese is classic, feel free to experiment with provolone, mozzarella, or even a smoked Gouda for a different flavor profile.
- Ham Alternatives: Any good quality deli ham will work if Black Forest ham isn’t available. You could also use thinly sliced turkey breast for a “Turkey Cordon Bleu” twist.
- Prep Ahead: You can cook the chicken and slice the ham and cheese a day in advance to cut down on prep time on the day you plan to bake the rolls.
- Make-Ahead Dough: If using the bread machine, you can prepare the dough, let it complete its first rise, then punch it down and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours. Let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes before rolling and filling.
