The arrival of grilling season is always a cause for celebration! There’s something undeniably special about longer days, warmer evenings, and the enticing aroma of dinner sizzling on the grill. For many, including our family at Love Bakes Good Cakes, burgers are a perennial favorite. We adore experimenting with creative new topping ideas and, even more excitingly, reimagining beloved dishes into burger form. This year, we’ve struck gold with a fusion that brings hearty European tradition to the American barbecue: the Rouladen Burger.
No backyard barbecue is truly complete without an array of essential condiments, and for our family, Heinz Ketchup and the new Heinz® Yellow Mustard are absolute staples. Heinz Ketchup has been a constant in our household for generations – it’s the only brand I grew up with, and it’s the only one you’ll find in my kitchen today. So, when Heinz launched their new Yellow Mustard, we were incredibly excited to try it, especially for a recipe that hinges on robust mustard flavor.
Inspired by Tradition: The Rouladen Story
One of my most cherished comfort foods from childhood is “Rouladen,” a classic Middle European dish that holds a special place in my heart. For those unfamiliar, Rouladen typically consists of thinly sliced meat, often beef, rolled around a savory filling. While regional variations exist, the core ingredients usually include tangy pickles, crisp onions, smoky bacon, and a generous smear of mustard, all slow-cooked to perfection and often served with a rich gravy. The depth of flavor in traditional Rouladen is simply incredible – a harmonious blend of salty, sour, sweet, and umami that creates a truly satisfying meal.
Lately, I’ve found myself craving the distinctive taste of Rouladen intensely. However, preparing the traditional dish can be a bit time-consuming, involving careful rolling and longer cooking times. This sparked an idea: what if I could capture these magnificent Rouladen flavors in a quicker, more casual format? The answer, of course, was a burger! Burgers offer the perfect canvas for culinary experimentation, allowing us to enjoy complex flavor profiles in a convenient, grill-friendly package. This Rouladen Burger experiment was an instant hit, receiving rave reviews from everyone who tried it. It’s now officially on our must-make list for every grilling season, offering all the wonderful taste of Rouladen without the extensive prep. And for those who are true aficionados of the classic, keep an eye out – I foresee a traditional Rouladen recipe making an appearance on the blog in the very near future!
Every family often has its unique take on preparing Rouladen. Some might opt for pork, while others, like my mother, have always preferred beef. To someone encountering the concept for the first time, the combination of pickles, onions, bacon, and mustard wrapped within beef might sound unconventional. However, I can wholeheartedly assure you, this medley of ingredients is nothing short of miraculous when brought together. The mustard’s piquant kick, the pickles’ delightful tang, the onions’ savory sweetness, and the bacon’s smoky richness truly create a symphony of flavors that is utterly delicious. This perfect balance of tastes is precisely what we aimed to replicate in our Rouladen Burger. Discovering Heinz’s new thicker mustard was serendipitous, as its robust texture and flavor are ideal for embodying the authentic Rouladen experience in a burger.
For nearly 150 years, Heinz has been synonymous with making food taste great. Now, they’ve poured that extensive expertise into developing their new yellow mustard. One of the standout features of this new mustard, and a personal relief for many, is its innovative top-down, squeeze bottle design. Say goodbye to that annoying first squirt of watery product! Heinz has engineered this bottle to prevent separation, meaning you no longer have to shake it vigorously before use. This design ensures that every squeeze delivers a consistently thick, rich mustard that sits beautifully on top of your food, preventing soggy bread and ensuring maximum flavor impact. It’s a game-changer for anyone who, like me, frequently forgets to shake the bottle and dreads that watery mess. Heinz Yellow Mustard is widely available in 8, 14, and 20-ounce bottles. You can typically find it right next to Heinz Ketchup in the condiment aisle of your local grocery store – at my Walmart, they’re conveniently located across the aisle from each other, making it easy to grab both essentials for your next culinary adventure.
Crafting Your Perfect Rouladen Burger
Heinz Yellow Mustard isn’t just for Rouladen Burgers; it’s a versatile condiment that enhances all your grilling favorites. Imagine classic chili dogs piled high with diced onions and a generous zigzag of Heinz Yellow Mustard – pure perfection! It’s also fantastic in potato salad, provides a zesty kick to hot dogs and sandwiches, and serves as an excellent base for various sauces and marinades. The possibilities are truly endless!
To truly complete this easy yet impressive meal, serve your Rouladen Burger with a classic side of crispy French fries, perfectly complemented by Heinz Ketchup, and a cool, crunchy dill pickle. It’s the ultimate combination for a satisfying and memorable meal. I’ve shared how I love incorporating Heinz Yellow Mustard® into this recipe, and now I’m eager to hear from you! Essential Grilling Tips for the Best Burgers
Achieving the perfect burger starts with a few key grilling techniques. First, always preheat your grill thoroughly, whether it’s gas or charcoal, to ensure an even cook and those desirable sear marks. When forming your patties, avoid overworking the meat; this can lead to tough burgers. Instead, gently mix the ingredients and form patties that are slightly larger than your buns, as burgers tend to shrink during cooking. Press a small dimple into the center of each patty – this helps prevent them from bulging in the middle and ensures a flat, even surface for toppings. For juicy results, resist the urge to constantly flip or press down on the burgers with your spatula. A single flip is usually sufficient. Use a meat thermometer to check for desired doneness: 135-140°F (57-60°C) for medium-rare, 140-145°F (60-63°C) for medium, and 150-155°F (66-68°C) for medium-well. Let your burgers rest for a few minutes after grilling to allow the juices to redistribute, ensuring every bite is tender and flavorful.
Exploring Rouladen Burger Variations and Pairings
While the classic Rouladen Burger combination is sublime, there’s always room for personalization. Consider adding a slice of Swiss or provolone cheese during the last few minutes of grilling for an extra layer of creaminess. If you’re a fan of bolder flavors, a touch of horseradish mustard mixed into the ground beef or used as an additional condiment could be a delightful twist. For those looking for a lighter option, serving the Rouladen patty in a lettuce wrap instead of a bun is an excellent choice. Beyond French fries, this burger pairs wonderfully with a crisp green salad, a creamy coleslaw, or even some roasted root vegetables to echo its European origins. Don’t forget a cold beer or a crisp cider to complete the meal!

Servings: 6 servings
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
For the Burger Patties:
- 2 lb. 80/20 ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for brushing)
For the Sandwich:
- 12 slices bacon, cooked to desired crispness
- 1 large onion, cut into slices
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Dill pickle slices
- Heinz® Yellow Mustard
- 6 onion hamburger buns, or your favorite hamburger bun!
Instructions
- Preheat a gas grill over high heat or a charcoal grill until it glows bright orange and ashes over.
- While the grill preheats, sauté the onions in butter in a skillet until softened and some of the edges begin to brown. Remove from the heat, cover, and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until well mixed. Divide the seasoned ground beef and shape it into 6 patties. Lightly brush each burger patty with vegetable oil.
- Grill the burgers until browned and slightly charred on the first side (approximately 3-4 minutes). Flip the burgers over and continue to cook until they reach your desired doneness – about 4 minutes for medium-rare, longer for a more well-done burger.
- To assemble the burger: place one cooked burger patty on the cut side of the bottom bun. Top generously with the sautéed onions, a liberal squeeze of Heinz Yellow Mustard, several dill pickle slices, and crispy bacon. Place the top bun over the bacon to complete your Rouladen Burger. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Feel free to use your favorite type of hamburger buns, or for a low-carb option, serve the patties in crisp lettuce wraps.
